ABOUT ME

Hello! Welcome to my website. I’m Lucy Danser, a writer, storyteller, podcaster and OCD Advocate. I have always loved stories - on the page and the stage - more than anything else. I write about people that interest me and issues that bemuse me, with the intention of sparking difficult yet important conversations.

My play If This is Normal spent this Spring (2022) on a UK Tour. You can see reviews and more from that tour RIGHT HERE and buy a copy of the script published by Methuen HERE.

Please get in touch for availability and prices re: work and collaboration. Interested in commissions for plays, interviews and articles. I also teach classes on playwriting and storytelling.

BIO

PLAYWRITING

I have written three plays, If This Is Normal, Lost in Thought and Rachael’s Cafe, which have been performed around the UK at theatres including Theatre 503, The Old Red Lion, Yvonne Arnaud, Liverpool Royal Court, Soho Theatre, Greenwich Theatre, 53two, Old Fire Station, Embassy Studio at Central School of Speech & Drama, the Brighton Fringe, Edinburgh Fringe, VAULT Festival and Dublin Gay Theatre Festival. The plays have explored a variety of topics ranging from a complicated coming-of-age story to a mother and daughter coping with mental illness and a true tale of coming out as trans while living on the Bible Belt. I’m currently working on my fourth play.

JOURNALISM & BLOGGING

I run my own blog (on this very website) where I review books and write my #CoronaDiaries. My writing, usually on theatre, books or mental health, has also been published in various publications in print and online including WhatsOnStage, Theatre and Performance Magazine, The List, Huffington Post and Camden New Journal.

STORYTELLING

In 2017 I studied storytelling in NYC with Adam Wade and have since performed at Spark True Stories, Genesis Cinema and The Moth, coming second in the latter’s StorySlam and being selected for an episode of The Moth Radio Hour in 2020.

PODCASTING

I am a big podcast fan and during the pandemic I married my love of literature and my previous career in stand-up comedy production to create Comics’ Books, a podcast in which I interview comedians about the books that mean the most to them. The podcast was featured in PodBible, Chortle and BeyondTheJoke and received lovely reviews on Apple Podcasts. This led to me working with literacy charity United Way to teach storytelling workshops.

OCD ADVOCACY

As an OCD sufferer I am a passionate advocate and have both written and spoken publicly about the disorder. My play Lost in Thought examined the impact of OCD on a sufferer’s family members, my personal essays have been published in the Huffington Post (UK and US), in 2018 I partnered with BBC Ouch podcast to host an OCD Takeover episode and I have been a guest on various other mental health related podcasts.

WHAT’S NEXT?

In 2020 I attended Faber Academy and am currently working on my debut novel.
